It is certainly not an uncommon sight to have a pool table as the centrepiece of a family entertainment room, leisure venue or bar setting. Indeed the catalyst of much debate is what the difference between the game of billiards and pool is, when in fact there is none. Pool is just one of the many forms of games associated with a Billiards Table and is also known as pocket billiards.
The most popular kind is the eight-ball variation, also known as stripes and solids. In this version, there is one cue ball, seven striped balls, seven solid-colored balls and one black ball numbered 8. It is played on a billiards board with six pockets along the sides and corners of the board. To begin, all the balls are placed in a structured formation inside a triangular rack with the black 8 ball at its centre.
The first shot breaks the formation and scatters the balls across the board. Thereafter, according to the kind of ball that drops first, each player is assigned to either stripes or solids. The object of the game is for players to pocket their entire sets of balls and finally, to pocket the black ball in a pocket that is previously called. The winner is the first to pocket all his balls as well as the black eight ball.
When purchasing a billiards table for a leisure room within the home, a bar or an entertainment venue it is important to ensure that the space is large enough to not only accommodate the size of the table itself but to also allow for a cue to be fully extended without obstruction. On average, for a standard board measuring 8 feet, with a cue that is 58 inches long, the required room space is 13.5′ wide x 17′ long.
The wood of cheaper tables tends to sag in places over time, causing certain pockets to tilt, thus affecting the fairness of the game. Most places will therefore never use Pine for making these tables but choose to use hardwood, oak or maple, which are durable and fit for use in the long run.
For use in the home, they can also be customized, depending on the capacity and options provided by the manufacturer. Most manufacturers provide three options in terms of the felt lining: red, blue and traditional green in order for buyers to match it to their room decor. They can also be made into convertible dining room tables with a removable flat top.
Wooden leg designs come in a range of styles to compliment decor in any type of venue. The designs are endless, with Victorian, Baroque, Modernist and Gothic styled legs to Choose From. Some avid fans of the game may choose to invest in an antique table, in which case, the product will be etched with intricate designs of floral and be made of more expensive woods like rosewood.
Although for the average, “pool-hall junkie”, all that may be required is a flat and solid surface, with no bumps or marking on its felt lining and a good stock of chalk for making winning strokes, others may have more refined tastes. Mother-of-pearl and gemstone inlays will cost a pretty penny but produce a pool table that is an artistic statement as well a source of entertainment.
